September Mountain Community Newsletter
Ideas for Parents: Encouraging Their Best
Hi everyone!
So, it's September already--blame my tardy newsletter distribution on my other job, farming! All the crops finally decide to come in late--therefore the newsletter is late. This is the month to dance: radio station KKRN is holding a benefit with
DJ Dancin', on Friday, Sept. 17th, at the Mountain Community Center, and then the Community Center itself is hosting a sock hop the following Saturday, the 25th, to celebrate the new floors! The good KKRN news is that all the money for equipment has been raised--so now it's time to raise those operating expenses!
In a bow to our neighboring community, Whitmore, I must say I've been very impressed with their organization around the "Save Kilarc" effort. The board of their community center there has been learning some things from our Mountain Community Center board, too, so that's a nice, neighborly connection. Look soon for an announcement of an opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning to be a strong advocate for our small, rural, unincorporated communities to get some great training through a multi-community partnership. The first training will probably be Wed., Oct. 6th, probably at Simpson College, and will be a great follow-up for folks who attended the "Community Land Use Policies" workshop here in Round Mountain back in May--but anyone can attend. So if you didn't quite learn all you wanted to learn about making your voice heard during TANC, or Kilarc, or the Hatchet windmill process, this will be an opportunity to learn more about getting our voices heard, in connection with those from all our small, sister communities. I will distribute the information as soon as I get it, but for now, pencil in the Oct. 6 date, in early evening.
Some folks have asked why we distribute the handout for parents with this newsletter. Two reasons: first, Acorn (never affiliated with the national ACORN!) was founded with the mission of building healthy families--and when our kids are healthy, our communities tend to be healthy, so please read what this information has to say about building assets for our children. Second, we are lucky enough to receive funding to support this newsletter from Child Abuse Prevention, Intervention and Treatment funds, distributed through Shasta County Health and Human Services and the Shasta County Child Abuse Prevention Council, and they encourage us to provide 40 Developmental Assets information in as many ways as we can. Thank you, HHS and CAPCC!!! Please feel free to call Acorn if you have any questions concern resources for youth in our area.
Get out and enjoy the weather--
