Acorn Emergency Food Program

The Need

Our community has many members in it who needed assistance with food this year. Acorn's Emergency Food Program provided food to more than 80 adults without children, 70 adults living with children, 30 children under 5, and more than 50 children 5-18 years old, during calendar year 2009.

How to Get Food Assistance

Acorn offers emergency food assistance to all residents of Oak Run, Round Mountain, Montgomery Creek and Big Bend. We can provide individuals and families with a box of non-perishable food items to feed you for 4-5 days. You will need to provide us with some brief information about the ages of people living in your household, and any special food-related needs you might have. We work closely with Hill Country Health and Wellness Center staff, and sometimes we can meet special dietary needs. We can sometimes also provide help with hygiene items, diapers, and formula. We are not always in our office, so it is best if you can call first to make arrangements to get your food. Please call 337-6736. We are only able to serve most families two times per year. You do not need to bring us any "proof" of your need--we will take your word for it. If you need help but don't have transportation to Round Mountain, we are sometimes able to get boxes to Oak Run or Indian Springs schools.

How Do We Do This

Acorn receives funding for this program from the Shasta County Housing and Community Action Program, and we are a proud member of the Shasta Food Group, which includes other agencies providing food assistance throughout our region. We also work with our local schools, churches, and Hill Country clinic to help provide families with special food boxes at holiday times, though we are not in charge of those programs. We are grateful to have received donations through the Round Mountain U.S. Postal Service's annual canned food drives for many years.

You Can Help

We are always very happy to accept your donations of cash and non-perishable items! Your cash donation allows us to purchase items that we cannot otherwise order through our contract funding. For example, we are able to order deeply discounted bags of pasta, but not pasta sauce, so your donation allows us to purchase pasta sauce. We are happy to accept almost any canned goods or boxes, as well as personal hygiene and cleaning products. But please, please check the expiration dates on your items before you donate them--we will not make use of food that we believe is unsafe. For more information about the food program, please call Margaret or Staci at Acorn, 337-6736. Thanks for your support!
